URGENT CALL TO ACTION

We are writing to President Biden about the severe economic crisis in Afghanistan, and measures that his administration should take to alleviate the suffering of the Afghan people. One is to unfreeze the Afghan central bank funds being held in the U.S. and the other is to fill the $2 billion gap in the UN humanitarian aid appeal.

STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO THE SUSPENSION OF GIRLS’ RETURN TO SECONDARY SCHOOL IN AFGHANISTAN

March 23, 2022

Unfreeze Afghanistan is devastated at the news today that Afghan girls above age 11 are not permitted to attend school. We have pushed for ALL girls to be granted the right to attend school, and for male and female teachers to be paid so that all of Afghanistan’s youth can receive an education. Afghanistan’s future requires access to education for its entire population, girls and boys, women and men. This is not only the human right of the Afghan people, it is a clear religious obligation within Islam. We call on the Taliban to reflect earnestly on their responsibility as leaders of a country that desperately needs growth and recovery. We, along with other civil society groups, stand in steadfast solidarity with the women, girls and families of Afghanistan. Failing to allow ALL Afghan children access to education will jeopardize any chance Afghanistan has of international solidarity and compassion. For the sake of all the girls of Afghanistan, and the future of Afghanistan itself, we call on the Taliban honor the promise they made to reopen schools for all as soon as possible, for the spring 2022 school year.

AFGHAN WOMEN IN ACTION

Afghan women have put out an urgent call regarding the non-payment of salaries to Afghan women teachers and healthcare workers.

“There are currently more than 120,000 female teachers in public schools across the country, and about half of them are the sole source of income for their families. It is very difficult, even impossible, to ask these teachers to continue teaching without pay. We call on the international community, the World Bank, and other donors to help us fund the payment of Afghan teachers’ salaries in order to provide quality education to boys and girls, which is one of their fundamental rights.”

U.S. WOMEN IN ACTION

The most important thing we can do for Afghan women and girls right now is to call on the Biden Administration and key members of Congress to unfreeze the Afghan funds to pay teachers and healthcare workers.
